The investigators will study whether the drug tadalafil improves shortness of breath in 126 Veterans with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and high blood pressure in the lungs. The investigators will also assess whether tadalafil improves quality of life, home daily physical activity, exercise endurance, the frequency of acute flares of COPD, blood pressure in the lungs, and lung function. Veterans who enroll in the trial will be allocated by chance to either active tadalafil or an inactive identical…

The investigators propose a home hospital model of care that substitutes for treatment in an acute care hospital. Limited studies of the home hospital model have demonstrated that a sizeable proportion of acute care can be delivered in the home with equal quality and safety, reduced cost, and improved patient experience.

The study will evaluate the feasibility of using smartphone speakers and microphones to evaluate the caliber of the airways, detect airway obstruction, aid in airway disease diagnosis, and identify disease exacerbations.

In this study, xenon MRI will be used to evaluate regional functional consequences of mucus plugs in the lungs of patients with muco-obstructive pulmonary disease. Mucus plugs will be identified using CT imaging, and xenon MRI will be used to evaluate ventilation and gas exchange impairments in regions of the lungs corresponding to the airways downstream of mucus plugs.

Investigators are studying how a device called The Lung Master device can help people breathe better. The investigational device increases the amount of air our lungs can hold, which is important for overall lung health. The Lung Master is not approved by the FDA. The study has two visits approximately one month apart. In the first visit participants will take a spirometry test, particularly forced vital capacity (FVC), to measure volume change in the lungs. Participants will take the investigational device home…

Dynamic digital radiography (DDR) is a new advanced version of chest radiography that captures dynamic images at a rate of 15 frames per second. It is coupled with an analytical software that allows it to provide more advanced measures of lung motion, ventilation, and perfusion compared to traditional chest radiography. While implementation of DDR fixed machines are beginning elsewhere in the US, this trial involves the first applications of an FDA-approved portable DDR machine, for use at the bedside in the…

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether semaglutide, an FDA-approved treatment for diabetes and obesity, is feasible and tolerable in patients with advanced lung disease. The main question\[s\] it aims to answer are: 1. Are patients with advanced lung disease able to tolerate semaglutide therapy? 2. Are we able to titrate semaglutide therapy to a target weight? Participants will be asked to perform pulmonary function, physical function and body composition testing, as well as a blood draw before and…

Many control mechanisms exist which successfully match the supply of blood with the metabolic demand of various tissues under wide-ranging conditions. One primary regulator of vasomotion and thus perfusion to the muscle tissue is the host of chemical factors originating from the vascular endothelium and the muscle tissue, which collectively sets the level of vascular tone. With advancing age and in many disease states, deleterious adaptations in the production and sensitivity of these vasodilator and…

What eligibility can depend on

Each protocol is different. Study teams may consider diagnosis details, disease characteristics, prior treatments, age, general health, and the ability to attend required visits.

Before contacting a study

Review the official listing and consider having your diagnosis and treatment history available. Only the study team can confirm whether a trial may be appropriate.

Questions to ask

Ask about the study purpose, procedures, possible risks and benefits, visit schedule, travel, costs, and whether reimbursement is available.

Important: Varda Clinical is an independent discovery tool. It does not provide medical advice, recommend treatment, or determine eligibility. Verify study details with the official research team and discuss participation with a qualified healthcare professional.
